Residents battle rezoning that would allow 112-unit development on Commercial Drive

A group of Commercial Drive neighbours is slamming a proposed rezoning that would see the “clear-cutting” of an “oasis” of large trees.

Cedar Cottage Area Neighbours say the “speculative land assembly” of five single-family lots to make way for a proposed 112-unit development on Commercial at East 18th Avenue would remove dozens of irreplaceable mature trees.

The treed lot — including an “ancient creek bed” that would also be destroyed — is one of the last pieces of “green infrastructure” in a rapidly densifying neighbourhood, CCAN spokeswoman Lesley McLean said Thursday.
